Periodontal Disease/ Gum Disease

Gum disease can develop in varying degrees of severity, from the milder form of Gingivitis, to the more serious occurrence of periodontal disease, which is an advanced stage. Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults, but if caught in the early stages, is eminently treatable and preventable.

Although Periodontal Disease is a serious condition, it can be resolved through proper dental care and good oral hygiene techniques.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease include:

  • Bleeding gums whilst brushing or flossing your teeth
  • Pain or discomfort while chewing
  • Red, sore, swollen gums
  • Build up of calculus (tartar)
  • Bad breath or bad taste
  • Loss of or loose teeth
  • Teeth sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Changes in bite
  • Gums that have withdrawn from teeth and in between teeth

The diagnosis of Periodontal Disease can be made through an oral examination with us. As part of your consultation, x-rays are taken and the depth of the gum pockets measured.

Treatment is then undertaken to resolve the issue.
